Interstate 55

About

I-55 is about 964 miles long. It is the 14th largest interstate overall, and the 7th largest north-south interstate.

If you travel this interstate from one end to another you might experience quite the temperature change, from warm and humid New Orleans to the chill winds of the Chicago lakefront.

The southern end of I-55 is about 10 miles to the west of the heart of New Orleans in Laplace, Louisiana. The northern end is in the windy city of Chicago, where it connects to Interstate 90.

History

I-55 construction began in the 1960s, in order to replace the old Route 66. It was completed in 1979.
