About

Interstate 40 is approximately 2559 miles long. At that distance, it is the third longest of all US interstates, stretching across the majority of the country from east to west.

Its western end is near the west coast of the United States at Barstow, California, and its eastern end is near the east coast at Wilmington, North Carolina.

I-40 was completed in 1964. During the 1960s, The United States Government planned to use an atomic bomb to open up space for I-40 through California.
